Taper Parameter

Post by schmanse »

Hi Marc,

I was trying to use the HVSR function in the Geopsy program. When I looked at the contents of the Processing tab in the Quick Start Tutorial, I noticed that there are various window functions in the Taper tab. However, except for certain functions (Blackman, Gaussian, Tukey), there are no additional parameters. So, if I apply the Cosine Taper, at what percentage is the taper applied?

Also, if there are any generally recommended smoothing and taper functions, please let me know. Thanks!

Re: Taper Parameter

Cosine taper is continuous modification of the amplitude of the signal over the whole window. Usually, only the ends of the signal window should be modified. The best choice is then 'Tukey', a flat central part at 1 and cosine variations to 0 on both ends. The parameter is length (%) of the affected signal on both ends.

For smoothing, the default parameters are: Konno-Ohmachi, 20% and log for width and Y scale type. 20% log width corresponds to b factor of 40 (see SHITF+F1 or What's this for help).
